Booty Talk with Kelly Brabants

December 6, 2016

When life gives you (Lulu)lemons, return them and order some Booty by Brabants gear instead. I’ve ordered three pairs of leggings before even completing this article. What on earth am I talking about? Who is Brabants? Fitness guru, designer and sheer inspiration for women everywhere, Boston native Kelly Brabants is a girl boss through and through. Founder of fitness fashion brand Booty by Brabants, Kelly drew her inspiration from the Brazilian booty and the high-intensity, high-energy cardio-based classes that she teaches, which share the same name.

The workout is meant to whip the derrière into shape, and let’s be honest- in this day and age that’s like having Willy Wonka’s golden ticket.

Her classes have waitlists and her leggings, which come in every color under the sun, are being worn by the city’s most toned and trendy. It’s nearly impossible to walk into Boston’s prestigious gyms and boutique studios these days without catching a glimpse of the figure flattering leggings, whether you knew about them prior or not. Only just learning about them? Well, in the words of Biggie, “if you don’t know, now you know”. How you look working out can directly effect how you feel, and these babies will motivate you to absolutely kill it. The lightweight and breathable ribbed leggings are so popular that they even have their own hashtag (#BBBleggings). Not just for gym use, the Bom Bom and Baja pairs are so complimentary to the figure that you’ll want to toss a leather biker jacket on top and wear them on a night out. Kelly has an army of cool-girl followers trotting around in her tastefully textured designs, and having built this fitness empire from the ground up, she deserves it.

I am thrilled to have had the chance to interview Kelly and learn more about her and her brand that I have grown so loyal to. Enjoy!

A perfectly plump and toned derrière seems to be more sought after these days than a crocodile Birkin bag, and Booty by Brabants is the place to achieve that! Is it true that you fit 120 squats into one class?!

It all depends on the day, but pretty much! I like to switch up the workout every week, so that my girls are always being challenged in new ways. For example, last night we did about 40-50 burpees, 80 squats, 40 pushups, and some cardio dance moves all in a 50 minute time frame, it was amazing! Haha

Your classes have waitlists and your leggings are worn by Boston’s most toned and trendy. Any major plans in the works for Booty By Brabants that we can look forward to?

I have big plans in the works right now, one being the launch of my new winter line in mid December! The line will include new leggings and jackets that I have been designing and creating for a while now. I can’t wait for everyone to see it!

You’ve said that your message, inspired by your Brazilian background, is about embracing ones curves and being proud to show them off. Is that what sparked your interest in the fitness training industry to begin with?

My message is definitely to embrace your curves and to be proud of your body, but it isn’t what sparked my interest in the fitness industry. I have 15 years of dance training and I have always been obsessed with working out, so I knew that it was something I wanted to do as a career. I created Booty By Brabants because I wanted to share my passion for fitness, dance, and music and encourage women to feel confident in their own skin. I love teaching so much, and my classes are where I feel the most comfortable in my own skin.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Be a good person to everyone you meet, work your butt off for what you want, and don’t expect things to be handed to you. My dad is my business partner and he gives me A LOT of tough love, but I truly believe he’s the reason I’m able to run a successful business now.

The #BBBLeggings are one size fits all, which is nice because it almost unifies the women wearing them, like the sisterhood of the travelling pants! Was that intentional, or more of a convenience factor?

Both! I wanted to create a one size fits all brand to make the online shopping experience easier and more convenient. Also, I love that one pair of pants can fit so many different body types, it’s so empowering to me!

How many times a week do you work out, and what music are you currently working out to?

I teach 6 days a week and I usually do the entire workout. On top of that I work out about 4 days a week; lifting weights, boxing, or stair master. I’m obsessed with SO many songs right now! My top 3 at this exact moment are probably: “The Mack” by Nevada, “Don’t Wanna Know” by Maroon 5, “Call On Me – Ryan Riback Remix” by Starley.

What are your biggest indulgences?

Easiest answer… spicy chicken wings & homemade chocolate chip cookies. I’m OBSESSED.

Least favorite form of exercise?

Pilates or barre – I ‘m so high energy and I tend to get very antsy in those types of classes! (my favorite exercises are burpees and kettle bell swings – enough said! haha)

When you need to let loose in Boston, what are your favorite spots in the city to go?

I have been super busy with work lately but usually I will go out in the seaport or financial district area. For dinner I love Ocean Prime and Row 34, and to go out either Society on High, Liberty Hotel, or just a casual bar in Southie.
