It’s Legal: A Quick Guide to Marijuana in Massachusetts

December 15, 2016

It’s official: marijuana is legal in the state of Massachusetts. What exactly does that mean? Here’s a handy guide and a playlist (found at the bottom) with 58 tracks that in some way relate to getting high.

To begin, these regulations apply to Massachusetts residents over the age of 21. Still in high school or early college? Sorry but you have to hold on for a couple more years.

What’s OK:

  • Possession: Residents can possess up to 10 ounces of marijuana in their primary residence.
  • Growth: Residents can grow up to 12 plants per household.
  • Paraphernalia: Accessories like bongs, pipes, growing lamps, etc. are legal for purchase and sale.

What’s not OK:

  • Public consumption: Just like drinking and anywhere smoking tobacco is prohibited, in public areas it will continue to be illegal.
  • Driving under the influence: However, there is no rating system in place (yet) that is equivalent to the .08 blood alcohol content level for drunk driving. If you have weed in your car it must stay in a sealed package, concealed in a place like your glove compartment or trunk.
  • Selling: Till January 2018.  Legislators are pushing for a January 2018 time frame for pot shops to open for business. Basically we are in a weird grey zone for the next 12 months. Buying an ounce of pot from a dealer is legal, but the dealer selling it to you is breaking the law.
  • On campus: Colleges and universities reserve the right to ban marijuana use on their campuses.

Blueberry Yum Yum: The legalization playlist for all your celebratory needs.
