Budding Floral Designer

July 21, 2017

Last week I was invited to take a floral design class with the top rated florist in NYC. I’m not typically the DIY kind of person, but wow. I left feeling as though I had found my calling.  If you look at my Instagram page, you’ll see a lot of flowers incorporated into my feed; snaps from other people’s gardens (i’m yard-less), or bouquets my boyfriend brought home. Now it all makes sense, i’m pretty much destined to be a floral designer.

Who knew? For now i’ll be sticking with my day job, but it’s always exciting to find a hidden talent. Especially one that could save me money on future dinner parties (i’ll probably need a suitable dining room table first.) If you’re the creative type whose over paint & wine nights, i’ve found your answer.

We were given the formula to make the bouquet of the instructor’s choice. Our teacher, Steph, was adorable and engaging. She took us through each step of the process using the analogy of making a movie. It totally worked. She described how the base greens, or set props, are necessary in making the end result look organic. The more special flowers are to be used conservatively, so they really pop! She described these flowers as the lead actor, who spends most of her time in her trailer because she costs a million dollars an hour.

I could tell that she’s beloved by the owners, who were smiling while observing her class; evidence that she’s a superstar.

Last week I posted a photo of my wild flower arrangement to Instagram. A lot of you expressed interest in participating in a similar event. If you live in New York, I highly recommend taking a class at Scott’s.

Follow them @scottsflowersnyc to find out about upcoming classes or sign up for their e-mail updates. If you don’t live in New York, it can’t hurt to reach out to your local floral designer and request a class. Bring a few friends & a bottle of wine… that is, if they trust you around alcohol and sharp tools *which they might not.*
