Spring 2019 Reading List

March 7, 2019

2019 has been a really good year of reading so far. I struggled through Becoming by Michelle Obama for the first two weeks. Don’t get me wrong, her book was objectively good. She’s also a queen that we are unworthy of! But the book was loooooong. Several people have recommended the audio book, so if you’re thinking of diving in, I don’t want to discourage you– but perhaps take that route.

Since then, I have bounced back with some phenomenal (and easy) reads that I want to share with you. I read a couple of average books, which I won’t bother to share, but these ones are TRL musts. As always, if you’re going to buy the book, please do so through my link.

Favorites this year:

1.) YOU by Caroline Kepnes – I’m of the opinion that if you’ve already seen the show/movie, you shouldn’t bother with the book. YOU is not the exception to this rule. Rarely has a book creeped me to my core quite like this novel did. I read it in 3 days, and changed all my passwords after. Afterwards, head to Netflix and watch (Lonely Boy) Penn Badgley kill it as Joe Goldberg (no pun intended.)

Buy YOU

2.) Verity by Colleen Hoover – If you aren’t familiar with Colleen Hoover’s work, she’s basically an icon in the romance novel department. So, when she decided to give a psychological thriller a shot, I wasn’t completely sold. Well, Verity is the mind f*ck you’ve been looking for– with an ending that will leave you hating everyone and everything.

Buy Verity + also It Ends With Us (her best)

3.) The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen – Confession. After struggling through Becoming I read as many thrillers as I could get my hands on. I was book hungover, and knew junk-food books were the only thing that would help me get back to my readings goals. The Wife Between Us is exactly that. It’s a 24 hours kinda read that explores the complexity of romantic relationships. You may never see the twists coming, but you will if you read between the lines.

4.) The Light of Fireflies by Paul Pen – I finished this book weeks ago, and i’m still emotional thinking about it. I love reading through a child’s perspective, but it’s rare to find an author who can do it well. Paul Pen’s work is translated from Spanish, and impeccably done. This is the story of a boy who lives in a basement with his family. He was born there and has never left. Find out why.

5.) The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid- This month’s Bad Bitch Book Club selection is *everything*. Though my BOTM reviews are exclusive for my bad bitches, I can tell you that THIS is by far the best book I’ve read this year– and it’s been a phenomenal year for reading. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will recommend it to everyone you know.

Let’s read together:

1.) Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens- Though I am currently reading an average book about a dystopian near-future, next I plan on reading the critically acclaimed Crawdads. Apparently it’s a heart-wrenching coming of age story. Reese Witherspoon is a fan, so I likely will be too.

Buy Where the Crawdads Sing

2.) Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Reid Jenkins – The creator of my literary hero Evelyn just released on of the most anticipated books of 2019!! Random House #gifted me this book, and I can’t wait to read it. Daisy Jones is the lead singer of a 1970’s rock band, and if she’s anything like TRJ’s other protagonists– she’s bound to be a bad bitch!

3.) Pachinko by Min Jin Lee – Several people whose book suggestions I respect enthusiastically recommended this book. This book follows a Korean family through generations, starting with an unplanned pregnancy in the early 1900’s. I plan to read Pachinko when i’m on-track with my reading goals and can take the time to let a book marinate in my brain.
