I’m back to myself. Posting at obscure hours, because I just don’t care.
Hey peeps. Now that i’m living in New York and kinda getting used to it, I think it’s time to share my ~fashion predictions~ for the year. Usually I write this article in January. I was busy or maybe just lazy. Anyways, last year my predictions were pretty damn good. If you care to see the results, check the bottom of the page.
Anyways,
Colors:
Black, white, tan and beige are always cool. I don’t need to reiterate that. Warm colors are what’s hip for this year, and will follow into next year.
Jewelry:
Beyonce pretty much covered it in her most recent music video. Dylanlex is the standard. Brands like Natalie B, Vanessa Mooney (ty nikkij) and Child of Wild do a damn good job making these cool styles more accessible. In short: bold + matte metal. Revolve clothing might be a good place to start, as they generally carry pretty good quality brands.
Shoes: Metallic shoes rock. Let’s all be disco-divas together. If Leandra says that it’s cool, it’s cool.
Pants: SKINNY BOOTS (like above, but typically in black and brown) are traditionally worn with flares. Over-the-knee boots, are going to need your mini or skinnies back. Did the over-the-knee boot save the skinny pant?
Coat: Naturally, you’re going to rock out with your faux fur coat. Now that you’ve gotten used to the vest, you’re ready for an upgrade. Colors are fair game. Have you SEEN J.Crew’s fall 2016 coat? Their entire collection is cool girl goes to work.
Going out: If you live in the north-east, your leather leggings aren’t going anywhere. Your over-the-knee boots aren’t going anywhere. Your cropped tops, aren’t exactly going out…. but they certainly don’t look as good in the winter. Be more original. Laced-down tops are still cool, but word travels fast— I don’t see them being the “it” item past September. Def a go-to sassy shirt/dress– not as much your every weekend wear.
I have to remind you guys every year, stop wearing cropped tops with low-rise jeans.
Trends: Urban-Prep. Think 1960’s. 1970’s are still cool as long as you aren’t wearing your halloween costume. This might be a time for J.Crew to make it’s legit comeback (terrible stock, fabulous coat though.) Mara Hoffman remains Queen, featuring one of my favorites from Advanced Style in her #NYFW runway show.
Brands: EXPECT GUCCI. Yeah, I said it. You may have flashbacks to freshman year international students flashing logo belts, or only recognize the brand from rap songs– either way, they’re making waves…. they always have been, but now you’re going to pay attention. Their resort collection last year made them a trailblazer in this seasons “more is more” fashion philosophy. Coach’s came back last year. Anything can happen.
Expect the unexpected. People are into personalization. People are increasingly socially responsible. Last year Abercrombie made the comeback of the century…..who knew all it took was taking out the trash and slashing the prices?
2015 Predictions/Outcome
Vests: Everyone wore long-line blazer-vests and a lot of you gained a faux fur vest or two. Personally, I did not because I already owned too many. Overall: check.
Flared jeans: This year flared jeans were bigger than ever. The death of the skinny was a widely-spread topic amongst the fashion community. While I think skinnies will always serve a purpose, switching up popular denim styles is fun.
Frame Denim: Definitely became more popular, but not scalable. I’m neutral.
Oversized Chambray Shirts: Everyone owns a denim shirt now. Especially guys, which wasn’t my prediction, but makes sense.
Maxi-everything: I wore less maxis than ever this year. Midi is everything. Miss.
Zac Zac Posen: Definitely became more popular, but not scalable. I’m neutral.
Sneakers: Casual sneakers are cool as hell. Definitely got this one right.
Question for the audience:
Is fringe still cool?…. I hope so, I own a lot of it.
Rebecca Minkoff seems to think so.
