Last week I read “Would You Rather” by Katie Heaney. It was an easy, breezy, beautiful coming out story that would be impossible to finish in more than 72 hours. Every spare moment I had was spent reading this book. By the end I was certain that Katie was my best friend. I even followed her on Instagram like the creep I am.
A little background: Her first memoir, Never Have I Ever, was about being a 25 year old virgin with no successful romantic endeavors. I wasn’t familiar with it when I chose to read Would You Rather, which was gifted to me by Random House. Fortunately I did not need to read her first book to enjoy her second.
So what’s it about? Never Have I Ever chronicles Katie’s experience realizing that she is not romantically or physically interested in men. It’s thoughtful, self-aware, and very funny. She discusses her evolution of her activism, from running the wage-gap bake sale in college to recognizing the flaws of her own white feminism. It’s a lighthearted memoir that touches on everything from her crazed crush on Harry Styles to all the girls she was attracted to in hindsight.
I’d go on, but i’d rather not spoil it for you. This is the perfect book to finish on a medium length plane ride or a long day at the beach. If you’re looking for something light, flurry + yet powerful– this is your book.
I gave this book 5 stars on Goodreads, because I loved it that much.
