It’s been a couple weeks since i’ve posted a book review and there are a few reasons for that. For starters, the book reviews I write for my virtual book club– the Bad Bitch Book Club, are exclusive content for members only. If you’d like to join, just send me a quick email to Mackenzie@mackinstyle.com or slide into my DMs on any social media. Instead of doing weekly reviews, i’m going to do a roundup every few weeks. I really want to focus my attention on the club, which is already bringing me SO MUCH JOY! Who knew so many people would want to talk about books with me?! Had I known, I would have done this months ago.
A few weeks ago I speed-read Unbury Carol by Josh Malerman. While it was absolutely entertaining, it wasn’t exactly something I could analyze in depth– which is why I didn’t do a full post on it. I received it complimentary from my friends at Random House, but as always i’m only going to share my honest opinion. It was the kind of book that you’d be happy you found at the library. You can easily read it in one day at the beach. Carol is a woman who suffers from a unique condition where she falls into a coma in times of extreme stress. Unfortunately for her, her sleazebag husband wants to take advantage of the fact that he’s the only person who knows of her condition. If you’re into the wild west or specifically terrified of being buried alive, you’ll probably really enjoy Unbury Carol. I definitely enjoyed it, but it wasn’t particularly memorable.
Most recently I finished Bachelor Nation by Amy Kaufman. As a trash human who lives for everything Bachelor related, I knew I was going to enjoy this book. That said, I also thought that there would be very little new information. After all, I’m active on the r/bachelor subreddit (JUDGE ME) and I’m obsessed with Heather McDonald’s “Juicy Scoop” podcast. I also read Courtney Robertson’s book “I Didn’t Come Here To Make Friends” and LOVED it. Highly recommend, if you haven’t indulged already. Anyways, Amy goes above and beyond to go beneath the surface of “America’s Guilty Pleasure”, and it’s clear that the producers of the show were pissed about her investigative journalism. Like, she literally travels across the country to attend a dating workshop with Chris Soules. If you are a fan of the show, you will get a lot out of this book.
Next I’ll be reading Little Fires Everywhere for the Bad Bitch Book Club! If you want to know how I feel about it, you’ll have to join my club 🙂
