Most women will tell you that fashion rules are outdated. You don’t have to match your leathers, your metals, and WHO CARES if you pair navy with black? Despite this, many of us are reluctant to break the #1 rule of fashion “no white after Labor Day.” Well ladies, rules are meant to be broken! Especially this one. Now I am NOT endorsing your ripped white skinnies, wedges and a floral cold-shoulder top for Fall! That would be insane, and we would both be cold AF. However, I am here to remind you of the Mackinstyle guidelines for wearing white after labor day. Or, more fairly, when the temp is consistently below 70 degrees outside (Floridians, wear your white dresses for the rest of us!) As always, live your life– but if you want my opinion on this issue, here it is!
For the more complicated situations– remember that after labor day white becomes a COLOR as opposed to a NEUTRAL! You’d pair a color with neutrals; such as tan, brown, black and grey. In the summer white is a neutral, so you’d pair it with bright colors + pastels.
always chill – white sneakers
When my mom first taught me about the no white rule as a young girl, she included white shoes in the list of thing you aren’t supposed to wear. I think we can all agree that simply doesn’t apply to sneakers. You only need to stop wearing white sneakers when they evolve into a tan or grey from over-wearing them. Even then, just wash your damn shoes. As far as white boots go– I really think they are best used as a transitional piece between winter & spring.
mostly chill – white tops
I’m pretty sure we’ve all always been in agreement about where white tops stand in this “no white” rule. The rules don’t apply– and while you’ll probably wear less of your white cotton as it starts to get colder, they aren’t off limits!A summery top is still a summery top, but that usually just has to do with fabric (and sleeve situation.)
sometimes chill – white pants
Probably the most heated fashion debate you’ll hear is whether or not it’s OK to wear white jeans after labor day. To answer this question, i’d refer to my golden rule on this blog. I’ve been saying this since I started this blog at the age of 18 + it has never failed me. After Labor Day, white should be used as a pop of color as opposed to a neutral. Instead of wearing it with pastels and neons, it is correctly paired with true neutrals– tan, brown, black and grey! This is a really easy way to make sure the ~look~ works. In order to show you how to do this, I’ve created a few outfits as examples.
sometimes (but rarely) chill – white dresses
Of all the white apparel options, white dresses are the hardest to pull off post-summer. If you’re a bride-to-be, this can be especially difficult to deal with! Fortunately you are a Mack in Style reader, and I came up with some really cute white dress looks for the fall. Of course the easiest option is to wear a white sweater dress.
