5 Rules for Dressing for Early Spring

March 15, 2018

Ahh Spring! A beautiful myth in the North East. I know we choose to live here, and that the gorgeous fall does kinda/sorta make up for the heinous elongated winter, but it still brings me pain. Besides, my mom would be really mad at me if I moved any further. That said, when I’m sick of my favorite faux fur cheetah vest, you know it’s been overkill. I just want to dress for Spring, but I’m still really really cold. Fortunately I’ve come into a little (tax return) money recently and i’ve (nearly) paid off my credit card. So I have no problem adding a few things to my wardrobe. That, and my amazing Rent the Runway subscription, have made all the difference.

There are a couple of rules for dressing in March and April that can guarantee you look on point all the time.

1.) Dress in winter fabrics, but spring/summer colors

The same rule applies to early fall, but the opposite. In September/October (when it’s hot), wear fall/winter colors in summer fabrics.  Easy colors for spring include pink, blue and yellow (the hottest color right now.)

2.) Buy clothes that work for multiple seasons

Nautical stripes look great paired with denim in the spring, and in the summer with cutoff shorts or white pants on cold days. Black and white polka dots are super cute right now.

3.) follow the experts on insta

One of my favorite accounts to follow is Courtney Quinn aka Color Me Courtney (she’s the one in our header photo!) Courtney has completely mastered the art of a colorful wardrobe. Her instagram is a work of art, and though I originally was unsure of all the emojis– i’ve grown to love her voice/brand. Hopefully she intends on starting a clothing line, because I think it could be very successful. Julie Engel of Gal Meets Glam is the queen of all things spring fashion. She lives in Charleston, and pretty much exclusively dresses in pastels + florals. I envy her style. She is launching a dress line this spring, and you KNOW i’ll be purchasing at least one piece.

4.) wear the right footwear

I don’t care if it’s 90 degrees in March. If you live in New York City, keep your unpedicured feet in your shoes. Tan colored booties, sneakers outside of the gym, and flats are what you’ll be wearing. I’m also totally into white booties, go for it you go go girl! Don’t forget to own a pair of reasonably cute rain boots, otherwise you are sacrificing your other shoes to mother nature.

5.) choose the right outerwear

As someone who lives in the North East, outerwear is everything. Often time’s it’s the only way to express your style in the winter. There are holes in my J.Crew turtlenecks, people. I wear the same thing every day. The most important coats for spring are a jean jacket and something that is waterproof. If you’re extra like myself, you’ll probably also want a trench. If you’ve got the basics, everything else will look great.
